Slaithwaite and the surrounding area
The Colne Valley, in which Slaithwaite lies, is a beautiful part of the world but off the beaten track as far as tourists are concerned. There are great walks in the area and we are a 15-minute drive from the Pennine Way. Slaithwaite is a popular destination village for people from the surrounding area. The Huddersfield Narrow Canal runs right through the centre of the village. It has a wealth of independent cafes including Vanilla Bean, Om is where the heart is, Ashbys and Lock 22. It has a good selection of shops including antique shops, a gallery and a gift shop selling works of local artists, a secondhand book shop, a Polish pottery shop and a community-owned grocery. It also has an art studio, yoga studio and ceramics studio all of which can be booked for a one-off class. Slaithwaite has its own coffee roastery (Darkwoods), and is a local centre for textile-related arts and crafts. The Handmade Bakery sells excellent handmade bread and has a lovely cafe. The Rose and Crown is in the hills above Slaithwaite and serves good quality pub food at reasonable prices. For the evening there are several pubs, restaurants, and a wine bar overlooking the river and canal. Leeds and Manchester are also both easily reached by train within about 40 minutes. Our house is less than a five minute walk from the station. Marsden, Meltham, and Holmfirth are all a short drive away (or easily reached by bus or train) and have more cafes, pubs, restaurants and shops. Huddersfield is the nearest large town and has some good restaurants and a great little theatre.
